Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time to visit the region?

Well, our climate is Subtropical. From November to March: Intense heat during the day and cool at night. Summer rains, late afternoon and evening, maintains the level of rivers and waterfalls conducive to bathing. From April to August, the south wind leaves the weather very clean, dry and cold. Best time to see the canyons, because the strong winds do not allow the mist to set in the mountains. From September to November it starts to warm up. Wind changes, being the northeast the predominant, bringing heat and humidity. Good time for river jokes and tubing.
Temperature varies in winter from 0 ° C to 20 ° C and in summer from 10 ° C to 28 ° C. Mist or fog are common phenomena every year.

It's cold?

Not so much as in the upper part of the mountain range, which because of the altitude around a thousand meters is 6ºC colder than our altitude (100 above sea level).

Is it advisable to bring children?

Children are welcome in our hostel. We encourage you from an early age to become familiar with hiking trails, rivers and waterfalls. For them, the ideal are short trails, not too far from infrastructure. We have great options in this level around in the Refuge and in the National Aparados da Serra National Park - Itaimbezinho superior. For the very small, we provide a backpack for the father to carry in the back. The backpack holds up to 18 kg, so depending on the child, it can be used until around 4 years of age. But even at this age it's already cool that he tries to walk a few stretches.

Children under 5 years stay free of charge in their parents' apartment. We have a climbing wall in the social hall where they love to play. Also we have in the external area a special mini-arvorismo for children (like a play-ground) where there is no need of instructor, they play freely, since it is soft. In the surrounding area, there are bridges, river and short trails, which children usually love! In the zip line and abseiling (extra activities), we have specific equipment so they can also enjoy the vertical adventures.
And we also advise the kitchen to prepare special suits for our young guests.

What is the style of the inn?

Our Getaway was inspired by the American and Costa Rican ecolodges that are in or around National Parks and Conservation Units. They are lodged with exclusive services to enjoy the beauties of the region, to enjoy during the day activities of adventure, of observation of fauna and flora, and whose principle is silence and tranquility at night.

Our nightly activities are traquilas, luais with violeiro in appropriate place, slide-show on the canyons, night track. We do not encourage loud music, alcohol abuse or any kind of drug, nor do we have an environment for collective use after quiet hours. Our opening hours are from 8 am to 11 pm. Although we have a beautiful structure, WE ARE NOT BOUTIQUE HOTEL.

But is not Cambara do Sul there?

No. Refúgio Pedra Afiada is in the municipality of Praia Grande - SC, at the bottom of the canyons. Cambará do Sul (RS) is at the top of the mountain, a thousand meters of altitude, landscape of fields and coxilhas, and Praia Grande (SC) is the lower part, Atlantic forest and the visible canyon walls of any part of the municipality . The Refuge is at altitude 100. The canyons (this great geographical accident) function as the motto of the two States. The advantage of Praia Grande is to be able to better monitor the fog, a constant phenomenon throughout the year, the result of the shock of a hotter and wetter front with a colder one. On rainy days, the canyons function like a funnel and most of the water flows through the walls and quickly raises the level of the rivers that cross our municipality, providing wonderful rafting downhill, in addition, there are many more waterfalls in Praia Grande to the practice of rappel. But our biggest differential over Cambará do Sul is being able to be inside the guesthouse looking at those walls, alternating their color throughout the day, a unique sight!

How does lunch work?

We have a Bistro, small restaurant that serves specialties, from noon to 4 pm, also open to the general public. The value of the dishes is to the part of the daily. Be sure to try it!

How do activities work? Need to be scheduled?

We have a team of guides and equipment for the guest and / or visitor to discover this beautiful region of Aparados da Serra. We have options for rainy days, sunny days, full river days, dry river days, for children, seniors, sportsmen, beginner and experienced adventurers and also for that lover of the region who would like to discover places far from the crowd, from the most sought. Our area is a park of 32 hectares and many activities are done right here, trails, quadricycle, abseiling, zipline, tubing ...
Depending on the activity, it is important to schedule. See more details about them in the radius link (Activities).

What can we do on rainy days? If it rains, can I change the date?

We work with nature tourism, observation, sensitization, and for us nature is beautiful in any weather condition. With rain, the green gets greener, there is a special smell in the woods and from our experience, it never rains all day. It can rain two hours strong, but then it gives a truce of 1 hour, where we used to put the raincoats and walk a little. And in the middle of the woods, the rain never falls hard because it always touches the leaves before. We make short trails in these conditions, close to the structure, or the inn or the park, so that a thunderclap picks us up on the return, quickly we are already sheltered. We have wonderful comments from clients who have discovered other sensations when experiencing the natural environment in such situations, where we take people out of their comfort zone and challenge them. In addition, on rainy days, by our privileged position (next to the walls), we have a spectacle of waterfalls directly in front of the inn. Stunning scenery that a sunny day does not allow (photo above). Activities such as rappelling and tubing are also welcome on wet days as the staff would have to get wet anyway.

Is it possible to close the hostel for my family? For my company group?

Yes, it is possible. Request a special quote. We comfortably accommodate up to 35 people. And we can include a series of schedules that will make your stay unforgettable.

Can I bring my pet?

We love animals! Usually, whoever has pet, this is a member of our family. Someone who is in our company at all times, animals become part of our life and routine. We have to feed them, take them for a walk, on the birthdays and family events they are there, bathing and with their lozenges on their heads, interacting with everyone. As well as our children, we have to take care of the animals, and unlike the children who grow up, and mostly over the years they become less dependent, with the little pets it does not happen the same. Care and responsibility are constant. Therefore, sometimes when we can take vacations of all our responsibilities, forget the clocks, the news of the world, the rush of the big city, think only of "NOTHING!". As a result, we propose to our guests that when they come to stay, to get rid of their responsibilities and concerns to the maximum, come here, enjoy the most contact with nature. To experience the experiences that we leave behind in this running world that we live. Leave your emails, phone calls, pending in stand-by, awaiting your return. In the old days we accepted animals in our inn, today not anymore. As I said, they need attention, of differentiated feeding, and also their waste has to be cleaned. With this, the guests finally forgot the true proposal of the Refuge, which is in fact to take refuge and spend even one day without worry.
